The MEDPorts Association is proud to continue advancing cooperation and knowledge-sharing across the Mediterranean with the second Staff Exchange Program of 2025, hosted between the Suez Canal Economic Zone (SCZONE) – East Port Said Port and the Autoridad Portuaria Bahía de Algeciras – Port of Algeciras.

More than a maritime corridor, the Suez Canal represents a strategic hub for global logistics. Within this context, the exchange program welcomed Álvaro Sebastian Fernández from the Port of Algeciras to Egypt – East Port Said, for a five-day program dedicated to fostering innovation, cooperation, and professional development in the port sector.

Program Highlights

The exchange covered a wide range of activities, including technical visits, innovation workshops, and strategic discussions:

  • Day 1: Participation in a marine pollution response drill, a visit to the Maersk SCCT terminal in East Port Said, and innovation sessions on Vessel Traffic Service (VTS).

  • Day 2: Exchanges on sustainable construction in desert environments, sludge treatment, circular economy applications, and the energy transition in port areas.

  • Day 3: Visit to the Port Said tunnels, a critical infrastructure connecting Africa and Asia, positioning SCZONE as a key intercontinental logistics hub.

  • Day 4: Exploration of the Ro-Ro terminal under construction, the SCZONE Development Hub, and discussions on internationalizing port communities.

As part of the program, Álvaro was also welcomed in Alexandria at the Port Training Institute (PTI), AASTMT, where he had a hands-on look at PTI’s exceptional training facilities and simulators. His visit included a meeting with Prof. Alaa Morsy, Dean of PTI and the Maritime Research & Consultation Center, which went beyond training — exploring new avenues of cooperation and knowledge sharing to further connect the Eastern Mediterranean and European port communities.

The MEDPorts Staff Exchange Program continues to create opportunities for future leaders to unite, exchange expertise, and shape common solutions to the challenges of global logistics. Each exchange adds new perspectives and reinforces our shared vision: MEDPorts means Network, Collaboration, and Impact.

We extend our sincere thanks to the Suez Canal Economic Zone (SCZONE) and the Port Training Institute (PTI) for hosting this successful collaboration, which reflects the strength and unity of our members.
